Like the other reviewers, I am a beginning adult piano student. And like most of us, I’m going through a plethora of books and DVDs to find the “right” one. Pete Sears’ DVD comes pretty darn close. He has a very conversational style that would nearly make you reckon he’s a small “spacey”, but that is far from the case. He provides a very solid (and I believe) very classical approach to piano instruction. But, the DVD is a long lecture – not sub-divided into specific topics. I found it very cumbersome to go back to a paritcular point. I strongly suggest that you go to his website and download the script to the DVD (I use the script as a textbook when I’m involved his exercises). Its all there and its a “must” if you really want to get the most out of his very excellent approach to piano instruction.
It is very nice DVD course of piano, very logical and very practical. It clarify things very well, the musical theory, the way how to play and so on. It is much of fun to follow exercises and as in two weeks of following one I can play some unadorned pieces but what is much more vital I know what I’m doing. 5 start I like the DVD.

What a wonderful book! As an adult intermediate student, I am using these exercises to enhance my finger dexterity and rhythms. I am currently working on Haydn’s Arietta con Variazioni in A Major, and my teacher specifically assigned exercises 26-32 to complement the work. Several of the exercises really parallel the more tough rhythms. The exercises are not only helpful but pleasing to the ear, often reminiscent of Bach. The book is full of drills far more fascinating and challenging than the ubiquitous Hanon.
With wit and clarity and with a fantastic sense of the fun to be found in mastering musical exercises, Mr Pearl has produced a gem of a book. He managed to welcome me, step by intelligent step, to hours of enjoyment at the keyboard. As an aging music lover I am so grateful to have found his book. And I just gave it to my fifteen year ancient nephew for his birthday. It’s getting him to the piano again! Mr. Pearl’s book lives up to its title in the best doable way–it’s deceptively fun and smart. A joy from beginning to end.
